Connections
"Connections," features the work of four remarkable artists who explore the deep ties between art and the landscape.
This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to engage with the British landscape through the eyes of four distinct artists, each bringing their own perspective and techniques to the theme of "Connections." Whether it’s the stormy seas of Shetland, the rolling hills of Somerset, or the textured layers of memory and emotion, visitors are sure to find something that resonates.
Artists and Their Inspirations:
Margaret Micklewright brings to life the rugged beauty of the British Isles, drawing from her upbringing on the Isle of Arran and her extensive travels to wild places like Dartmoor, Cornwall, and most recently, Shetland. Her mixed media works—created with oils, ink, charcoal, and even brown wrapping paper—capture the essence of the landscapes she explores, from the Nordic colours of Shetland to the tranquil beauty of Somerset’s Levels. Visitors will also have the opportunity to read Margaret’s Shetland diary, providing insight into her creative journey.
Andrea Oke uses paper to tell intricate stories, often through the art of paper cutting and shadow animation. A graduate of the University of the West of England, Andrea has contributed her talents to various cultural projects across Somerset, including work for The National Folk Centre at Halsway Manor and The South West Heritage Trust. Her work, which includes recent commissions for Mother's Ruined Gin, brings a unique narrative quality to the exhibition, showcasing her ability to animate the landscape with both simplicity and depth.
Mary Stradling (BA HONS), a member of the Clevedon Art Club, combines palette knife painting, watercolours, and textiles to explore mark-making. Her work frequently features the landscapes and coastlines of Somerset, often created en plein air to capture the immediacy and vibrancy of the scene. Mary’s pieces reflect her deep connection to the environment, blending stitch and print with paint to evoke the textures and rhythms of the natural world.
Angela Uren offers a deeply personal interpretation of the ever-changing landscape. Her oil paintings, applied with knives and fingers, capture the fleeting nature of memory, echoing the seasonal transformations she observes in her surroundings. Angela’s work invites viewers to connect with the landscape on a visceral level, emphasizing the emotional resonance of time and place
