Ilminster Arts Centre Café Supervisor

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join the Arts Centre café in the very heart of the Ilminster.

The café has recently re-opened following a short period of refresh and decoration. All the proceeds from the café are used to benefit the Arts Centre and its special role in the local community. The café is currently run by an excellent team of trained volunteers, so we are now in need of a café supervisor to work with those volunteers and to manage and develop the café. The café currently offers good quality, but a limited range of, food and beverages. It is our aspiration to increase the offering to include a selection of tasty and appealing hot food and light lunches. 

JOB TITLE: Arts Centre Café Supervisor 

TERM: Up to two-year fixed term contract, which may then be extendable. However, we are looking to engage a supervisor as soon as possible and would consider a short-term contract to facilitate an immediate starting date. 

HOURS: Normally 30 hours per week to cover the core hours the Arts Centre is open, including most Saturdays (i.e. one Saturday off per month) 

RESPONSIBLE TO: The Arts Centre Manager 

WORKING WITH: Ilminster Arts Centre staff, volunteers and trustees 

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Café volunteers 

SALARY: £12.50 per hour minimum, depending on experience 

PURPOSE OF THE JOB 

To lead the running, organisation, and delivery of the onsite community café at Ilminster Arts Centre. To supervise the café volunteers to ensure standards including food hygiene, customer service and health and safety are maintained. 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Taking the lead in customer service. 

  2. Monitoring standards in customer service, Health and Safety, cleaning, maintenance, food preparation, till procedures and licensing. 

  3. Running the cafe operation to include preparing and delivering food and beverages, managing stock control and ordering. 

  4. Ensure the highest standard of food quality and presentation. 

  5. To manage the café rota and ensure staffing levels are effectively managed to deliver the cafe service. 

  6. Supporting café volunteers to take orders, process payments. Cash handling to include end of day cashing up.  

  7. To train and supervise café volunteers in their daily roles ensuring compliance with food hygiene standards, allergen awareness and health and safety. 

  8. Undertaking routine cleaning of the kitchen and café areas including monthly deep cleans. 

  9. Working with the Arts Centre staff and Trustees to develop the role of the café in supporting the vision of the Centre. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

ESSENTIAL  

  • Experience of working in a team in a catering environment 

  • Food safety and hygiene certificate Level 2 

  • Experience of processing payments and cash transaction. 

  • Excellent communication and customer care skills 

  • Good numeracy and writing skills 

  • ICT skills for use of PC and other technologies. 

  • Ability to work calmly under pressure 

  • Neat and tidy personal appearance 

  • Maintains and expects high standards of honesty and integrity 

  • Self-motivated ‘hands on’ approach. 

Desirable 

  • Risk Assessment training 

  • First Aid Certificate 

  • Experience of working with volunteers 

  • Enthusiasm to develop and expand the Arts Centre café offering 

Circumstances to consider 

  • This is a fixed-term contract but may be extendable. 

  • The Arts Centre is currently open 9.30 am – 3pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays. 

  • Standing for long periods necessary. 

  • Work entails reasonable lifting of heavy / bulky objects within published health and safety guidelines on manual handling.
