Old Herbaceous - Play

The much-loved one-man play by Alfred Shaughnessy, tracing the relationship between Head Gardener, Herbert Pinnegar, and his employer, Mrs Charteris, as he tends the garden of her country manor house in Gloucestershire. A play about life, love, and times long gone, all beautifully crafted and expertly told. Humorous, touching, and sown with seeds of gardening wisdom!

Written by Alfred Shaughnessy
Directed by Simon Downing
Starring Giles Shenton as Herbert Pinnegar

“Adapted by Alfred Shaughnessy from Reginald Arkell’s novel of the same name, Old Herbaceous is an hour and a half of sheer delight.” - The Reviews Hub

“One very talented actor, Giles Shenton, keeps us engrossed, entertained, amused and emotionally engaged for an hour and a half as a gardener in a potting shed... who knew that would work? A wonderful production: funny, emotional, touching, instructive.” - Surrey Advertiser

“A tour de force, expertly and beautifully told, at times funny yet at others full of pathos and bringing us to tears.” - Dorchester News
