Batik Workshop

The workshop will introduce you to the medium of Batik. Batik is a dyeing technique using wax resist. It is made by applying wax on a cloth to prevent colour absorption during the dyeing process. This creates a patterned negative when the wax is removed from the cloth. Resist dyeing using wax has been practiced since ancient times having been thought to have been developed in Indonesia.

Your tutor, Cait Crisp’s interest in Batik started over thirty years ago when she was a student at Chichester University.  She has never tired of the wonderful effects that can be achieved using a variety of techniques applied with the Batik process.

During the course of this workshop you will be provided with tuition that will equip you to create a beautiful design on the day.

You will be given instruction and advice as to how you can use this amazingly versatile medium to its full potential. Techniques such as colour blending with the dye and other ways of using the wax, such as crackling, and over coating dye with wax in order to achieve stunning effects.

You will first make a preliminary design on paper, and we can discuss how to best achieve your vision. You can then practice using the tjanting tool to enjoy the flow of wax and the delicate movements of the hand with this amazing tool. Once you feel confident to begin your main piece of work you will attach your plain white cloth to a wooden frame and then let your creative juices flow!

Once your batik has been completed and dried you shall take your cloth off the frame and iron off all of the wax. It shall then be stapled to a plain canvas that you can take home and place on a wall immediately.

Cost: £45 (including materials). Additional £6 on the day for the plain canvas
